Best in test firewall manufacturer releases an even better version [2002-11-15]
The IT-security company Clavister AB has launched version 8.0 of the award winning Clavister Firewall. The previous version 7.0 won awards in French and Swedish IT-press as the best firewall technology on the market for 2002. The latest version has a totally new administrative interface, improved VPN functions and carrier class performance. In conjunction with the 8.0 release, Clavister is also launching a new appliance series, as a result of close cooperation with Sanmina-SCI Development.
- The biggest changes are additional functions requested by especially large corporations and operators; better performance, a larger number of simultaneous sessions and a new powerful administration interface, says John Vestberg, CTO at Clavister.
Clavister 8.0 can be delivered as a Firewall Appliance with customized hardware for extremely high performance and availability or as software for installation on optional hardware. The new hardware platform is developed together with Clavister's partner Sanmina-SCI. Today there are four series developed for different types of environments and demands. These are the H (high-end)-, R (remote office)-, M (mid-range)- and S (small & medium enterprise)-series.
- Sanmina-SCI is a leading global supplier of custom-made electronic solutions. Together with Clavister we have constructed a hardware platform, which in combination with Clavister's software is one of the safest on the market. The hardware minimizes operation interruptions and maintenance needs, says Anders Sterner at Sanmina-SCI.
The cooperation with Sanmina-SCI makes it possible for Clavister to offer products and support for small local offices as well as the largest international operators.
- The deal with Sanmina-SCI gives our customers full support all over the world and a direct product replacement service if anything should ever go wrong, says Michael O. Jönsson, Vice President, Clavister AB.
In the September 2002 issue of IT magazine, Nätverk & Kommunikation (Network & Communication), Clavister Firewall was once again named "best in test", despite facing tough competition from other leading firewall vendors. Clavister Firewall has received similar awards in the French IT-press during 2002.
Technical features
Clavister Firewall is designed to be secure, from the ground up. First of all, it is not based on any traditional operating system, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux or NetBSD. Not even a real-time operating system, like VxWorks or similar, is used. Instead, Clavister Firewall consists of a minimal boot loader and a compact firewall core of some one hundred kilobytes in size, which contains the entire software needed for the operation of a complete firewall system. This means that inherited security vulnerabilities from an underlying operating system are completely avoided, and that Clavister Firewall, due to its compact size, is the most resistible security product on the market.
Clavister Firewall is primarily based on Stateful Inspection, the de-facto standard for firewalling technology today. To achieve the highest protection possible, Clavister Firewall keeps states on all common IP protocols, including TCP, UDP and ICMP. Every packet received by the firewall is subjected to several thorough consistency checks regarding header sizes, options, fragmentation and flags. These tests provide protection against network layer DoS (Denial-of-Service) attacks as well as OS fingerprinting or "fire walking" attempts.
To manage the complex security problems involved in the file transfer protocol (FTP), Clavister Firewall includes a completely unique application layer gateway (layer 7 proxy), which makes it possible, for the first time, to establish secure FTP connections through a firewall.
The news in short
- A new generation of administrative tools with improved support for multiple firewalls.
- Improved VPN-functions with support for certificates based on X.509 and new algorithms for cipher encoding (including the new standard AES)
- Policy based routing, which makes it easy to integrate Clavister Firewall with complementing safety products like anti-virus and filtering products
- Operator level performance with higher throughput and up to five million simultaneous sessions
- New hardware platforms developed in cooperation with Sanmina-SCI
- International production- and support agreements with Sanmina-SCI
